Buying Knitting Needles as Gift

Janel writes..

Do you want to buy a gift for a knitter in your life, but aren't sure what to get? A nice pair of knitting needles might be the perfect gift, but which ones to chose?

What type of knitting needle material? There are primarily three types of knitting needle materials: plastic, metal, and wood. Most knitters start with plastic and metal knitting needles because they're cheaper. Most, but not all, knitters prefer wooden knitting needles because they are relatively light, a little flexible, and are smooth without being slippery. The highest end knitting needles are often made of hardwoods and can be quite beautiful.

What type of knitting needle? There are three types of knitting needles: straight, double pointed, and circular. Straight needles can be used for most knitting and almost all knitters will have some straight needles. Some knitters prefer circular needles because they make it easier to transport a knitting project without dropping stitches. Other knitters hate circular needles because the cord on the needle can get twisted. (Lantern Moon makes a very nice circular knitting needle that rotates freely of the cord, so there is not a problem with twisting). Very large knitting projects, like sweaters and dresses, almost require the use of circular needles. Double pointed needles are primarily used by knitters who make small round things like socks. Double pointed needles are also used to finish hats or make cords for purses.

What size of knitting needle? Knitting needles are sized in US sizes and in millimeters, so be sure to check which number you are looking at. The size needles to buy depends on the type of knitting they do. The sizes suggested below are approximate (there are always projects which use needles outside these ranges), but these are fairly safe guesses: For knitters who make very fine lace, such as the edging for pillow cases or doilies: US size 000 to 2 (1.5 to 3mm) For knitters who make socks: US size 2 to 6 (3.0 to 4.0mm) For most knitters who make hats, scarfs, mittens, and sweaters, they will find a use for needles between US size 5 to 9 (3.75 to 6.0mm). For knitters who felt: US size 10 to 11 (6.0 to 8.0mm) For knitters who use thick, chunky yarns (often for scarfs, hats, or sweaters): US sizes >10 (>6.5mm)

Where to buy? Your local craft store will have a reasonable selection which includes basic knitting needles. If you want high quality, distinctive needles, it is best to go to a yarn store. Look in your yellow pages for yarn shops or buy needles online. A pair of gorgeous knitting needles usually costs between $18 and $25, but is something they'll be able to use and enjoy for the rest of their life.
