It is HOT here now. REALLY hot. Like a million I think. Our house does not have air conditioning. All we have is a window unit that the old owners left in the basement. It cools a single room well, but that's it. Right now it is in Turing's room so he can sleep.
So we have been looking into other solutions. Janel was quoted $1500 for a central air unit, which is less then I thought. The other option would be to get a bunch more window units. You can find 5000btu ones easily for $25 on craigslist all the time. The problem with the window units is they ruin the functionality of the window and they are about 50% as efficient as central air units.
There is something else called a 'ductless air conditioner.' (Gmail put up ad for one that's how I knew.) So basically what they are is a central air conditioner split into two pieces. One piece goes outside, one piece goes inside. The outside unit hands the refridgeration and the inside unit handles the air flow. I guess you pipe it out a window? Maybe drill a hole? Dunno, but it sounds a whole lot easier than central air.
A quick look them in the $700ish range for once that'll cool our house. hmmm. Time for more research.
